How Many T-Shirts

how_many_t-shirts for a t-shirt quilt

How Many T-shirts?

It’s hard to say! The list here is only an approximation of the number of T-shirts, sweatshirts or other clothing items it may take to make a quilt of that size.
You may need more T-shirts if the designs on the T-shirts are small. Or you may need fewer if the designs are big. Count each T-shirt you have as one, whether it has a design just on the front or a design on the front and back. The more T-shirts you have with fronts and backs means you will need to be lower end on the approximate number needed. If you have T-shirts with small designs on just one side, you will need more T-shirts.
Generally, we take the number of T-shirts you send and cut them. Then we determine what size quilt those T-shirts could make. We will e-mail you and tell you the dimensions of the quilt that these T-shirts can make. At this time you can accept the dimensions of the quilt or you can add or remove T-shirts so the quilt is the size you would like.
*Note that we can make your quilt what ever size your T-shirts will allow. So you might have a quilt that is in between standard sizes. What ever size your quilt is, the size will be divisible by four.
**Another Note - Concert T-shirts tend to have large designs on the front and backs of them. They almost go two to one of typical T-shirts. So keep that in mind when you are counting out your T-shirts.

Quilts Made from Baby Clothing

A quilt made from baby clothes is so cute. Most of the time we make baby clothes quilts for the mother rather than the child. These quilts are time consuming and tricky to make well and thus cost more than a T-shirt quilt. We make two types of baby clothes quilts – simple and complex. We have two price levels of baby clothes quilt: one for simple and the other for complex baby clothes quilts. Below is information about each style.
Simple baby clothes quilts are made using a block or two from each clothing item. These blocks are just blocks of fabric without any special adornments. We start by cutting one block from each item. We then save the unused portion of the clothing items in case we don’t have enough to make a quilt the size you want.  The blocks are puzzled together like our T-shirt quilts.
Our simple baby clothes quilts do not include the applique or sewing down of items such as necklines, collars, bibs, hats, socks, outfits or other such items.
Although these quilts appear relativity simple, they do require a very skilled sewer and quilter to make them look right. As a result, they cost more than a typical T-shirt quilt.

Complex

Our complex baby clothes quilts also use a block from each item, but these blocks may include zippers, buttons, bows, collars and other adornments. We also include items that will need to be stitched onto or appliqued onto another block of fabric. These items include entire outfits, dresses, socks, soft shoes, bibs, hats and bloomers.
The result is an interactive quilt with a 3D feel to it. Buttons can be unbuttoned, zippers zip and unzip. Bibs may flip up. Stuffed animals feet and arms are free to move. Quite simply, these quilts are wonderful.
A complex baby clothes quilt takes much, much more work than a simple one. The variety of fabrics mixed with the 3D items makes sewing and quilting these quilts very difficult.  Thus, they are priced at a higher rate than a simple baby clothes quilt.

How to Plan a Baby Clothes Quilt

  1. Decide what style of quilt you want made – complex or simple.
  2. Collect the clothing.
  3. Clean and Mark. Here are the directions for preparing items for a quilt. Most of the time, there is nothing to mark not to use. We use any part that is not X’d out. We also try to avoid stains. But these are baby clothes, and they will have stains.
  4. Box Up Your Items.
  5. Print out an order form.
  6. E-mail or call your quilter to tell them to expect your items. The e-mail address and phone number are on the order form.
  7. Ship to the address at the top of the order form.

T-Shirt Preparation Directions and Other Important Information – Please read!
!  Wash T-shirts without perfumed detergents or dryer sheets. Perfume makes us sneeze and you don’t want us sneezing on your quilt! If you do not have detergent that is perfume free, please just wash the T-shirts in a washing cycle without any detergent. Also dry without dryer sheets.

!  If there is a part of your T-shirt that you DO NOT want used, X it out with blue painters masking tape. We will use all the graphics and designs that are not X'd out.

!  If you would like an item to be used in its entirety, please attach a note to the item.

!  If applicable, we may use pockets and necklines in your quilt. If you DO NOT want these used in your quilt, tell
us not to use them in the special instructions on this order from.

!  If you have a special request for a particular T-shirt - say you want it centered - write that request on masking tape and stick it to the T-shirt. The tape will remain on the block during the process and will come off when the request is fulfilled. We would ask that you keep your requests for placement of T-shirts to just a few. The more specific placements that are requested, the less flexibility we will have in laying out your quilt.

!  Stains. Normally we do nothing about stains on your T-shirts. If this is ok with you, then you don’t need to do anything. But if there is a stain that you don’t want in the quilt, mark that area with blue painters masking tape. On the masking tape write what you want done - say remove or avoid if possible. If you ask us to remove the spot, the area in question will be cut out and a piece of matching fabric will be used to fill in the hole. If you ask us to avoid the spot we will try to cut the T-shirt block not to include the stain. But we tend to want to center the design on the block rather than have it off center. Having the design off center will often be more noticeable than leaving the stains.

!  A separate order form needs to be filled out for each quilt. You are welcome to send more than one group of T-shirts in a single box, but please put each in a separate plastic bag with their own order form. If you are sending more than one quilt order, double check that the right T-shirts are in the right bag. We won’t mix up your T-shirts, but if they come mixed up there is no way we would know that.

!  Are you concerned you will have too many T-shirts for the size quilt you would like? If so, put a stack of the least wanted T-shirts in a separate plastic bag and note for us to use them if they are needed to make the quilt the size would you like. Any whole uncut items that are not used will be returned with the quilt.

!  If we communicated via e-mail about a special issue or request, please print out and attach that e-mail to this order form. If you spoke to us on the phone, please remind us what we discussed
